Have you ever been confused as to what YOUR own authentic style looks like? Well everyone has been there, but fear not here’s a basic idea to all the different styles of fashion which are broadly classified. If you want to be more specific, I can also make a separate guide on each of the categories and their sub – categories, let me know in the comments which sub – categories should I include in my next blog post!
So, without wasting anymore time, lets dive into it!
- Casual:
Casual fashion is relaxed, comfortable, and practical. It includes jeans, t-shirts, sneakers, and comfortable fabrics like cotton and denim. Casual style is perfect for everyday wear and informal occasions. If you like being effortless and want to play it safe in fashion, then casual and basic outfits are for you! Long oversized t-shirts, mom jeans and flare and wide jeans are a must. You can also layer with jackets and cardigans.
- Formal:
Formal fashion is characterized by elegant, tailored clothing suitable for dressier occasions like weddings, galas, or business events. This style often includes suits, dresses, dress shirts, and formal shoes like oxfords or heels. However, you may als incorporate them in your daily wear if you want to give off an elegant and sophisticated vibe. A-line long skirts or pencil skirts, or black or muted colour bottoms paired with shirt, coats and ties are your go-to for formal wear.
- Streetwear:
Streetwear draws inspiration from urban culture and typically features casual, comfortable clothing with bold graphics, logos, and influences from skateboarding, hip-hop, and graffiti art. Hoodies, graphic tees, sneakers, and baseball caps are common streetwear items.
- Vintage:
Vintage fashion involves clothing and accessories from a previous era, typically from the 1920s to the 1990s. It celebrates nostalgia and individuality, with unique pieces sourced from thrift stores, vintage shops, or passed down through generations. Accessories are the main ingredient here, any vintage watches, jewelry and purses will definitely help you in bringing out that vintage style. Lace, ruffles and furcoats are a must in vintage style.
- Bohemian:
Bohemian, or boho, style is free-spirited, eclectic, and often incorporates natural fabrics, loose silhouettes, and earthy colors. It draws inspiration from artistic and nomadic lifestyles, featuring flowy maxi dresses, peasant blouses, and fringe details.
Experiment with bold colors and scarfs, and also style with blouses or dresses with unique patterns.
- Minimalist:
Minimalist fashion embraces simplicity, clean lines, and a neutral color palette. It is a modern style and will give you a polished and sophisticated look. Minimalist wardrobes often include basics like neutral/ limited color shirts, pants, and simple dresses. You can play with many styles and include plain and minimal patterns, to give that effortless look.
- Preppy:
Preppy style originated from traditional Ivy League fashion and is characterized by clean-cut, classic clothing with a sophisticated yet casual vibe. Key elements include collared shirts, chinos, cable-knit sweaters, and boat shoes, often in bright, preppy colors.
- Athletic:
Athletic wear, or athleisure, blurs the line between activewear and casual clothing. It’s designed for comfort and functionality, featuring performance fabrics like moisture-wicking materials, stretchy leggings, sports bras, and sneakers. If you have a profession that deals with active lifestyle and fitness, then this one is for you as comfortable style is your priority here in order to have body flexibility.
- Avant-garde:
If you consider yourself bold, experimental and creative, you can make your OWN trends in this one! Avant-garde fashion pushes the boundaries of conventional style, often featuring experimental silhouettes, innovative fabrics, and unconventional designs. It’s bold, artistic, and challenges traditional notions of fashion, sometimes appearing more like wearable art than everyday clothing. This one’s perfect for all the fashion enthusiasts, you won’t need my recommendations here, just go experiment and express your creativity to your fullest!
So, I hope you got a general idea and a place to start out to find your authentic fashion style. I’ll be making in depth guides on sub – categories as well, so stay tuned for that!
