Want to Look Expensive? These Fabrics Make All the Difference

Expensive looking fabrics

These days it’s all about the trends and fast fashion brands are in vogue.

But have you ever picked up a piece of clothing for instance a pair of jeans, which was manufactured 10 years ago and feel the difference between the jeans from the present.

You’ll definitely see that the jeans is still so durable and in shape, whereas the present ones is fading and shrinking (the one which you purchased maybe just 6 months back!).

The difference is, my friend, all about the quality of that jeans.

If you check the label of the jeans fabrics today composed mostly from materials like polyester which is literally derived from plastic…

Imagine, you are trying to save up few bucks but your jeans starts shrinking just in 3 washes, and you might need to replace it every year again!

This is the reason why it is so damn important to check the labels of your clothes and get the fabrics right.

Otherwise you might just drain your pockets replacing that pair of jeans every year.

Here’s a guide to selecting outfits, without breaking the bank:

1. Natural Fabrics all the way!

First things first, check on the label for the fabric composition.

Now if there’s the word polyester 100%, RUN. If it’s blend of Cotton and Polyester with the latter being the majority of the percentage, then that is OK.

You can also refer to the image below to get an idea of the best blend of fabrics for clothing items.

Best Fabric composition

Of course, some synthetic fabrics are not entirely bad but actually helpful as it gives more structure or softness when worn.

For example, a 100% wool sweater irritates skin, so go for a blend of 70% wool and 30% polyester.

But always look for fabrics which are made of mostly silk, wool, cotton, linen, and cashmere, As these tend to give more refined and classy look.

2. Pay attention to Texture

Have you ever noticed that whenever you wear clothes made of polyester or acrylic, it looks quite stiff and flimsy.

Instead go for tightly woven fabrics such as fine wool, twill or jacquard. They hold their shapes and makes you look more polished.

3. Go for a Matte finish

Unless you’re a dancer or some kind of performance artist, I assure you that you really don’t need those glossy polyester pants or tops that everyone is going crazy about in the latest trends these days.

If you want to look more refined and expensive, avoid flashy and glossy outfits at all costs.

There are so many more alternatives to glossy polyester, such as satin, silk, suede and crepe which give a rich feel and even when you wear, it will be so much more comfortable on your skin.

4. Pay attention to the finish and details

This also another big difference between the jeans from 10 years ago and now- The seams and clean edges.

Even the high end fashion brands have deteriorated in quality in terms of this and as a consumer you should definitely get the best quality of clothing for every penny you paid for!

The most important thing to check for is the finishing of the fabric:

Are there any threads hanging around the edges?

Are the buttons misaligned?

5. Go for timeless colors and minimal prints

Neutral tones (Black, white and beige) and subtle prints tend to look more refined and are fit for daily use, than flashy or overdone designs.

The patterns on fabrics also tend to fade sometimes, so be careful if you’re going to buy patterned clothes and read the wash care labels.

You wouldn’t want to buy high maintenance fabrics with fragile wash care and ironing and often times the fabric care ends up costing more than the outfit itself. LoL.

Here are all the fabrics to AVOID if you want to look expensive:
